13 years ago, the film, “The Matrix” released in theaters. The film was based on graphic novels written by the Wachowski siblings, who also were executive producers of the film. This production is considered to be one of the most iconic films in the last century. An often-quoted line from this movie is “there is no spoon” which refers to that even if you try to change your reality you cannot. Recently, many people have watched this movie again and realized that “it takes two pills; one red and one blue” which refers to a quote from Neo when he pleads with Morpheus for more answers about his reality being an illusion. The movie “The Matrix” is the story of two men named Neo and Morpheus. They are told they can change their reality, but there are repercussions for this. One pill (capitalized) will slow down the aging process by keeping them young, but leaves them vulnerable to physical pain or mental torment. The second pill (lower case) slows down life in reality in order to protect against the external forces that may harm the human mind, but it comes at a price. This movie is a metaphor for the human soul. The human soul is a double-edged sword. If it is used to benefit others or to do good deeds, it will stay with the individual and help them to perfect themselves spiritually. But if it is misused, an individual may become damaged spiritually and emotionally so they feel as if their life has no meaning or purpose. In order for us as humans to improve our lives, we must first take the red pill that shows that this reality may be an illusion, but at least we can choose what type of reality we would like our lives to be in. This is why Neo feels as if he is not himself. He has no identity anymore because he cannot even remember his past, and without a past to hold onto, we as humans feel as if we have no purpose in this world. The red pill represents the material world and the blue pill represents the spiritual world. The Wachowski siblings created a movie that was meant to show that it takes two pills (one red and one blue) medicine (capitalized) for us to be able to navigate through life successfully; we need both pills (capitalized) in order for us to achieve self-improvement, self-development and self-actualization. But we must be able to choose which pill we would like our lives to be in. The red pill (capitalized) represents the material world and the blue pill (lower case) represents the spiritual world.
